✧ I saw Ali being brought a mount to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said: "In the name of Allah." When he settled on it, he said: "Praise be to Allah. Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could not have done it ourselves. And indeed to our Lord we will return." Then he praised Allah three times and said Allahu Akbar three times. Then he said: "Glory be to You. There is no god but You. I have wronged myself, so forgive me." Then he laughed. I said: "Why did you laugh, O Commander of the Believers?" He said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do the same as I did, then he laughed. I said: 'Why did you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'The Lord marvels at His servant when he says: "My Lord, forgive me," and He says: "My servant knows that no one forgives sins except Me.""

machine translationAbū Ziyād al-Qaṭṭān narrated to me from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, who said: I used to be amazed at the hadith of ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah, "I was riding behind ʿAlī", because ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah was a youth in the time of ʿAlī, and I denied that someone like him could have been riding behind ʿAlī, until Sufyān narrated to us from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah. I said to Sufyān: Did Abū Isḥāq hear it from ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah? He said: I asked Abū Isḥāq about it, and he said: A man narrated it to me from ʿAlī b. Rabīʿah.
