✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ forbade me—I do not say he forbade you—from wearing gold rings, [and wearing] qassi and dyed garments, and from reciting the Quran while I am bowing. And he clothed me in a suit made of siyarā'. I went out wearing it, and he said: O Ali, I did not clothe you with it for you to wear it. He said: So I returned with it to Fatimah and gave her its edge. She took hold of it to fold it with me, and I tore it into two pieces. He said: She said: May your hands be soiled, O son of Abi Talib! What have you done? He said: I said to her: The Messenger of God ﷺ forbade me from wearing it, so wear it and clothe your women.

machine translationI asked my father about a hadith narrated by al-Zuhrī, Usāmah b. Zayd, Nāfiʿ, Ibn Isḥāq and al-Walīd b. Kathīr, from Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbdillāh b. Ḥunayn, from his father, from ʿAlī: "The Prophet ﷺ forbade me to recite while bowing" (the hadith). And it was narrated by al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿUthmān, Dāwūd b. Qays al-Farrāʾ and Ibn ʿAjlān, from Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbdillāh b. Ḥunayn, from his father, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from ʿAlī. Which of the two is correct? My father said: Those who narrated from his father did not say "I heard ʿAlī" except some of them, and these three are of unknown reliability (mastūr), and an addition is accepted from a trustworthy narrator (thiqah). Ibn ʿAjlān is trustworthy (thiqah), and al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿUthmān is not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī). Usāmah was not satisfied until he narrated from Ibrāhīm, and then narrated from ʿAbdullāh b. Ḥunayn himself, and Usāmah is not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī). My father said on another occasion: al-Zuhrī is the better memorizer.
