✧ When the Khawarij went out to al-Nahrawan, Ali stood among his companions and said: These people have shed forbidden blood and raided the people's livestock. They are the nearest enemy to you, and if you march against your enemy, I fear these will leave you in your rear. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: A group will emerge from my nation. Your prayer is nothing compared to their prayer, nor your fasting compared to their fasting, nor your recitation compared to their recitation. They recite the Qur'an, thinking it is for them, but it is against them. It does not pass beyond their throats. They pass through Islam as an arrow passes through the target. The sign of that is that among them is a man with an upper arm but no forearm, on it is something like the nipple of a breast, on it are white hairs. If the army that fights them knew what was theirs on the tongue of their Prophet, they would rely on the deed. So march in the name of Allah. And he mentioned the hadith in full.
