✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me and Fatimah at night and woke us for prayer. He said: Then he returned to his house and prayed for a portion of the night. He said: He did not hear any sound from us. He said: He returned to us and woke us, saying: Get up and pray. He said: I sat up, rubbing my eyes, and said: By Allah, we do not pray except what is decreed for us. Our souls are only in the hand of Allah. When He wills to raise us, He raises us. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away, saying, and striking his hand on his thigh: 'We only pray what is decreed for us, we only pray what is decreed for us. And man is the most argumentative of all things.'

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrated it from ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn, and there is disagreement about it from him. Al-Layth narrated it from ʿUqayl, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn, from al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī, from ʿAlī. This is what Abū Ṣāliḥ, the scribe of al-Layth, said, and Qutaybah b. Saʿīd and Ḥujayn b. al-Muthannā, from al-Layth. It is said that it was like this in the book of al-Layth, then it was said to him that the correct version is from al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī, so he returned to the correct version. Likewise Ibn Lahīʿah narrated it from ʿUqayl, from al-Zuhrī, in the correct form. Likewise Yaḥyā b. Bukayr and more than one narrated it from al-Layth. Likewise Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah, Ḥakīm b. Ḥakīm b. ʿAbbād b. Ḥunayf, Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān, Isḥāq b. Rāshid, Yūnus b. Yazīd, Muḥammad b. Abī ʿAtīq, Zayd b. Abī Unaysah and Maʿmar b. Abān b. Ḥumrān narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn, from his father, from ʿAlī. Maʿmar narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn as a mursal report. Likewise Misʿar narrated it from ʿUtbah b. Qays, from ʿAlī b. Ḥusayn, also as a mursal report. The correct version is what Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān and Ḥakīm b. Ḥakīm and those who followed them narrated from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn, from his father, from ʿAlī.
