✧ I said to him: What is the most you saw Quraysh inflict on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the enmity they displayed toward him? He said: I was present with them when their nobles gathered one day in the Hijr, and they mentioned the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: We have never seen anything like what we have endured from this man. He has made fools of our minds, reviled our fathers, found fault with our religion, divided our community, and insulted our gods. We have endured from him a grave matter – or something like what they said. He said: While they were thus, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared before them. He came walking until he touched the corner, then passed by them while circumambulating the House. When he passed them, they made gestures at him with some of what they were saying. He said: I recognized that in his face. Then he went on. When he passed them the second time, they made gestures at him with something similar, and I recognized that in his face. Then he went on. When he passed by them the third time, they made gestures at him with something similar. He said: Do you hear, O assembly of Quraysh? By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have come to you with slaughter. He said: The people were seized by his words, until there was not a man among them but it was as if a bird had settled on his head. Even the harshest of them toward him, who had previously advised against him, began to soothe him with the best words he could find, until he said: Depart, O Abu al-Qasim, depart rightly guided; for by Allah, you were never ignorant. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ departed. When the next day came, they gathered in the Hijr and I was with them. Some of them said to others: You mentioned what reached you from him and what reached him about you, but when he confronted you with what you dislike, you left him alone. While they were in that state, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared before them, and they leaped at him as one man, surrounding him and saying to him: Are you the one who says such and such? – referring to what had reached them of his criticism of their gods and their religion. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Yes, I am the one who says that. He said: I saw a man among them grab the gathered part of his cloak. He said: Abu Bakr al-Siddiq stood in his defense, saying while weeping: Would you kill a man for saying, My Lord is Allah? Then they dispersed from him. That was the worst I ever saw Quraysh reach with him.
