✧ I entered upon Abdullah b. Amr b. al-As in his house, and he questioned me, thinking that I was from the tribe of Umm Kulthum, daughter of Uqba. I said to him, "I am only from al-Kalbiyya, daughter of al-Asbagh, and I have come to ask you about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ enjoined upon you, or said to you." He said: "During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I used to say: I will certainly recite the Qur'an every day and night, and I will certainly fast the whole time. That reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from me, so he came to me and entered my house and said, 'Has it not reached me, O Abdullah, that you say: I will certainly fast the whole time and recite the Qur'an every day and night?' He said: I said, 'Yes, I have said that, O Prophet of Allah.' He said, 'Then do not do that; fast three days of every month.' He said: I said, 'I can do more than that.' He said, 'Then fast Monday and Thursday.' He said: I said, 'I can do more than that, O Prophet of Allah.' He said, 'Then fast one day and break the fast one day; for it is the most just fast in the sight of Allah, and it is the fast of Dawud. He never broke a promise when he made one, nor did he flee when he met the enemy. And recite the Qur'an once every month.' He said: I said, 'I can do more than that, O Prophet of Allah.' He said, 'Then recite it once every half month.' He said: I said, 'I can do more than that, O Prophet of Allah.' He said, 'Then recite it every seven days, do not increase beyond that.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left."
