✧ I was sitting with him in the shade of the Ka'bah while he was narrating to the people. He said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey and we stopped at a place. Among us were those setting up their tents, those among the grazing livestock, and those practicing archery, when the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out: 'Prayer is to be gathered.' He said: I came to him while he was addressing the people and saying: 'O people, there was no prophet before me except that it was incumbent upon him to guide his Ummah to what he knew was good for them and to warn them of what he knew was evil for them. Indeed, the well-being of this Ummah is in its beginning, and its latter part will be afflicted with trials and tribulations that will make one another seem insignificant. A trial comes and the believer says: This is my destruction, then it clears away. Then another comes and he says: This one, this one. Then another comes and he says: This one, this one, then it clears away. Whoever wishes to be moved away from the Fire and enter Paradise, let death come to him while he believes in Allah and the Last Day, and let him bring to people what he loves to be brought to himself. Whoever pledges allegiance to a leader and gives him his hand-clasp and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him if he is able.' He said once: 'as much as he is able.' When I heard that, I put my head between two men and said: 'But your cousin Mu'awiyah commands us...' He placed his joined hand on his forehead, then lowered his head, then raised his head and said: 'Obey him in obedience to Allah, and disobey him in disobedience to Allah.' I said to him: 'Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes, my ears heard it and my heart retained it.'
