✧ I came to Abdullah b. Amr b. al-As while he was sitting in the shade of the Kaaba, and I heard him say: While we were with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a journey, he stopped at a place. Some of us were setting up their tents, some were with their animals, and some were competing in archery when his caller announced: 'The prayer is to be held in congregation.' He said: So we gathered. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ stood up and addressed us, saying: 'There was no prophet before me except that he guided his community to what he knew was good for them and warned them against what he knew was evil for them. Indeed, the well-being of this community of yours has been placed in its early period, and its latter part will be afflicted with severe trials and matters you will disapprove of. Trials will come, each making the previous one seem insignificant. A trial will come, and the believer will say: This is my destruction. Then it will clear. Then another trial will come, and the believer will say: This is it. Then it will clear. So whoever among you wishes to be moved away from the Fire and to enter Paradise, let death overtake him while he believes in God and the Last Day, and let him bring to people what he loves to be brought to him. And whoever pledges allegiance to a leader, giving him his handshake and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him as much as he can. If another comes to dispute with him, strike the neck of the other.' He said: I inserted my head among the people and said: 'I adjure you by God, did you hear this from the Messenger of God ﷺ?' He said: He pointed with his hand to his ears and said: 'My ears heard it and my heart retained it.' He said: I said: 'This is your cousin Mu'awiya—meaning he commands us to consume our wealth among ourselves in falsehood and to kill each other, while God Almighty has said: "O you who believe, do not consume your wealth among yourselves in falsehood."' He said: He clasped his hands and placed them on his forehead, then bowed his head for a moment, then raised his head and said: 'Obey him in obedience to God, and disobey him in disobedience to God, Mighty and Majestic.'
