✧ Some people from the people of Kufa came to ʿUthmān and informed him of what had happened regarding al-Walīd—that is, his drinking wine. ʿAlī spoke to him about that, and he said, "Here is your cousin; carry out the prescribed punishment on him." He said, "O Ḥasan, get up and flog him." He said, "You have nothing to do with this; appoint someone else." He said, "Rather, you have become weak, feeble, and incapable. Get up, O ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar." ʿAbd Allāh began striking him while ʿAlī counted, until he reached forty. Then he said, "Stop"—or he said, "Refrain"—"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ flogged forty, Abū Bakr forty, and ʿUmar completed it to eighty, and each is a sunnah."
