✧ Umar b. al-Khattab acquired land from the Jews of Banu Harithah called Thamgh. He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have acquired valuable property and I want to give it as charity.' He said, so he made it an endowment: it is not to be sold, given away, or inherited. Those of sound judgment among the family of Umar are to oversee it. Whatever surplus comes from its produce is to be spent in the way of Allah Almighty, for the wayfarer, for freeing slaves, for the poor, for relatives, and for guests. There is no blame on the one who oversees it to eat from it in a reasonable manner or to feed a friend without acquiring wealth from it. Hammad said: Amr b. Dinar claimed that Abdullah b. Umar used to send gifts from it to Abdullah b. Safwan. He said: Hafsah gave some of her land as charity on that basis, and Ibn Umar gave some of his land as charity on that basis, and Hafsah oversaw it.
