✧ We came to Ibn Umar and sat at his door waiting for permission to enter. He said: The permission was slow in coming. He said: So I went to a hole in the door and began peeping through it. He noticed me, and when he gave us permission and we sat down, he said: Which of you peeped into my house just now? He said: I said: I did. He said: By what right did you deem it lawful to peep into my house? He said: I said: The permission was slow in coming, so I looked, and I did not do it deliberately. He said: Then they asked him about various things, and he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Islam is built on five: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving the zakat, performing the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting Ramadan. I said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, what do you say about jihad? He said: Whoever strives, strives only for his own soul.

machine translationYazīd al-Taymī al-Aʿraj narrates it from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿUmar as his own statement (mawqūf). Likewise Abū al-Jawzāʾ Aws b. ʿAbdullāh and Wabarah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated it from Ibn ʿUmar as mawqūf. Its being raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ) is sound (ṣaḥīḥ).
