حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي غِفَارٍ فِي مَجْلِسِ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِحَدَّثَنِي فُلَانٌ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أُتِيَ بِطَعَامٍ مِنْ خُبْزٍ وَلَحْمٍ، فَقَالَ: نَاوِلْنِي الذِّرَاعَ، فَنُووِلَ ذِرَاعًا فَأَكَلَهَا. ( قَالَ يَحْيَى: لَا أَعْلَمُهُ إِلَّا هَكَذَا )، ثُمَّ قَالَ: نَاوِلْنِي الذِّرَاعَ فَنُووِلَ ذِرَاعًا فَأَكَلَهَا، ثُمَّ قَالَ: نَاوِلْنِي الذِّرَاعَ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّمَا هُمَا ذِرَاعَانِ، فَقَالَ: وَأَبِيكَ، لَوْ سَكَتَّ مَا زِلْتُ أُنَاوَلُ مِنْهَا ذِرَاعًا مَا دَعَوْتُ بِهِ، فَقَالَ سَالِمٌ: أَمَّا هَذِهِ فَلَا، سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ اللهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى يَنْهَاكُمْ أَنْ تَحْلِفُوا بِآبَائِكُمْ.

Translation

✧ That the Messenger of God ﷺ was brought food of bread and meat, and he said: “Hand me the foreleg.” So a foreleg was handed to him and he ate it. (Yaḥyā said: I only know it thus.) Then he said: “Hand me the foreleg,” so a foreleg was handed to him and he ate it. Then he said: “Hand me the foreleg.” Someone said: “O Messenger of God, there are only two forelegs.” He said: “By your father, had you kept silent I would have kept being handed forelegs from it as long as I called for them.” Sālim said: “As for this one, no. I heard ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar say: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: ‘God, Blessed and Exalted, forbids you to swear by your fathers.’”
