✧ When the people deposed Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah, Ibn ʿUmar gathered his sons and family, then testified, then said: “Now then, we have pledged allegiance to this man upon the pledge of God and His Messenger, and I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘Indeed the treacherous one will have a banner raised for him on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said: This is the treachery of so-and-so.’ And indeed among the gravest treachery — except that there be associating partners with God Most High — is that a man pledges allegiance to a man upon the pledge of God and His Messenger, then breaks his pledge. So let none of you depose Yazīd, and let none of you advance in this matter, lest it be a severing between me and him.”
