Notes

machine translationʿAbdullāh b. Aḥmad said: My father said: Then an illness afflicted me in the gathering of ʿAbbād b. al-ʿAwwām, so I wrote down the rest of the hadith, but I think I did not understand some of it, so I doubted the remainder of the hadith and left it.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationSufyān is weak (ḍaʿīf) in his narration from al-Zuhrī, and someone with a better memory than him from al-Zuhrī contradicted him and narrated it as a mursal.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 4698
  • Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn

machine translationNo one corroborated Sufyān in it; it is not authentic (ṣaḥīḥ).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 4698
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Sufyān b. Ḥusayn and Sulaymān b. Arqam narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ. There is disagreement about Sulaymān b. Kathīr: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī narrated it from Sulaymān b. Kathīr, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ, while others narrate it from Sulaymān b. Kathīr as mawqūf. Yūnus narrated it from al-Zuhrī, who said: Sālim b. ʿAbdillāh had me read the letter of ʿUmar on the zakāt, and he related the hadith in full. The statement of Yūnus is closer to the correct view, and God knows best.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 4698
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationSufyān b. Ḥusayn alone narrated it as connected (mawṣūl), and he is weak (ḍaʿīf) specifically in his narration from al-Zuhrī, and the memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) among the students of al-Zuhrī do not narrate it as connected.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 4698
