✧ On the day of Uhud the women were behind the Muslims finishing off the wounded polytheists. If I were to swear on that day, I would hope to be righteous: that none of us wanted the world until God, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: 'Among you are some who desire the world and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you away from them to test you.' When the companions of the Prophet ﷺ opposed and disobeyed what they were commanded, the Messenger of God ﷺ was left alone among nine: seven from the Ansar and two men from Quraysh, and he was the tenth of them. When they surrounded him, he said: 'May God have mercy on a man who repels them from us.' He said: A man from the Ansar stood and fought for a while until he was killed. When they surrounded him again, he said: 'May God have mercy on a man who repels them from us.' He kept saying that until the seven were killed. Then the Prophet ﷺ said to his two companions: 'We have not been fair to our companions.' Abu Sufyan came and said: 'Rise, Hubal!' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Say: God is higher and more glorious.' They said: 'God is higher and more glorious.' Abu Sufyan said: 'We have 'Uzza, and you have no 'Uzza.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Say: God is our protector, and the disbelievers have no protector.' Then Abu Sufyan said: 'A day for the day of Badr; a day for us and a day against us, a day we suffer and a day we rejoice. Hanzalah for Hanzalah, and so-and-so for so-and-so, and so-and-so for so-and-so.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Not equal. Our dead are alive and provided for, and your dead are in the Fire being punished.' Abu Sufyan said: 'There was mutilation among the people, though it was not by the consent of all of us. I did not command or forbid, nor did I like or dislike, nor did it grieve me or please me.' He said: They looked, and there was Hamzah with his belly split open, and Hind had taken his liver and chewed it but could not swallow it. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'Did she eat any of it?' They said: 'No.' He said: 'God would not admit any part of Hamzah to the Fire.' The Messenger of God ﷺ placed Hamzah and prayed over him. A man from the Ansar was brought and placed beside him, and he prayed over him. The Ansari was lifted and Hamzah was left. Then another was brought and placed beside Hamzah, and he prayed over him, then lifted, and Hamzah was left until he prayed over him that day seventy prayers.
