✧ He was a close friend of Abdullah b. Masud, and Abdullah b. Masud visited him among his family but did not find him. He asked permission from his family, greeted them, and asked for water. The slave girl was sent to bring him a drink from the neighbors, but she was slow, so she cursed her. Abdullah left, then Abu Umayr came and said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, someone like you should not be treated with jealousy. Why did you not greet your brother's family, sit, and have some drink? He said: I did, and she sent the servant, but she was slow—either they did not have any, or they were reluctant to share what they had—so the servant was slow and she cursed her. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: When a curse is directed at someone, if it finds a way to him or a path in him, it strikes; otherwise it says: O Lord, I was directed to so-and-so but found no way to him and no path in him. Then it is told: Return to where you came from. I feared that the servant might be excused, and the curse would return and I would be its cause.
