✧ When we returned from the expedition of al-Ḥudaybiyah, the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Who will guard us tonight?” Abdullah said: “I said: ‘I will.’” He said: “You will fall asleep.” Then he repeated: “Who will guard us tonight?” I said: “I will,” until he repeated it several times. I said: “I will, O Messenger of God.” He said: “Then it is you.” He said: “So I guarded them until the face of dawn. Then the words of the Messenger of God ﷺ caught up with me: ‘You will fall asleep,’ and I slept. Nothing woke us except the heat of the sun on our backs. The Messenger of God ﷺ got up and performed the ablution as he used to, along with the two rakʿahs of dawn. Then he led us in the morning prayer. When he finished, he said: ‘God, Mighty and Majestic, if He had willed that you not sleep through it, you would not have slept. But He willed that you be an example for those after you; so this is the way for one who sleeps or forgets.’” He said: “Then the she-camel of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the camels of the people scattered. The people went out looking for them and brought back their camels, except for the she-camel of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Abdullah said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: ‘Take this direction.’ So I took where he told me, and I found its halter twisted around a tree that only a hand could have untied.” He said: “I brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and said: ‘O Messenger of God, by the One who sent you with the truth as a prophet, I found its halter twisted around a tree that only a hand could have untied.’” He said: “And Sūrat al-Fatḥ descended upon the Messenger of God ﷺ: ‘Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory.’”
