✧ I went to my maternal aunt Maymunah bt. al-Harith and spent the night with her. I found that it was her night with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the Isha prayer, then entered his house and placed his head on a leather pillow stuffed with palm fiber. I came and placed my head on one side of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up, looked, and saw that it was night, so he returned and glorified Allah and said takbir until he fell asleep. Then he woke up when half the night—or he said: two-thirds of it—had passed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up, relieved himself, then came to a water skin hanging on a wooden post. He rinsed his mouth three times, inhaled water three times, washed his face three times, and his forearms three times each, wiped his head and ears once, then washed his feet—Yazid said: I think he said: three times each. Then he came to his prayer place. I got up and did as he had done, then came and stood at his left side, intending to pray following his prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ paused until he realized that I intended to pray following his prayer, so he turned to his right and took hold of my ear and turned me around until he made me stand at his right side. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed two rakʿahs, as much as he thought remained of the night. When he thought that dawn was near, he stood and prayed six rakʿahs, making the seventh the witr. When dawn broke, he stood and prayed two rakʿahs, then lay on his side and slept until I heard his snoring. Then Bilal came to him and informed him of the prayer, so he went out and prayed without touching water. I said to Saʽid b. Jubayr: “How excellent this is!” Saʽid b. Jubayr said: “By Allah, I said that to Ibn Abbas, and he said: ‘Hold on, it is not for you or your companions; it is for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for he used to be protected.’”
