✧ I witnessed al-Yarmuk. Over us were five commanders: Abu Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, Yazid b. Abi Sufyan, Ibn Hasnah, Khalid b. al-Walid, and Iyad. This Iyad is not the one who narrated to Simak. He said: Umar said: 'If fighting occurs, Abu Ubaydah is in charge of you.' So we wrote to him that death had surged upon us, and we sought reinforcements from him. He wrote to us: 'Your letter seeking reinforcements has come to me. I point you to one whose victory is mightier and whose army is more present: Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Seek His help. Muhammad ﷺ was granted victory on the day of Badr with fewer than your number. When this letter of mine reaches you, fight them and do not refer back to me.' He said: So we fought them, defeated them, and killed them over four farsakhs. We took spoils. They consulted, and Iyad advised us to give ten for each head. Abu Ubaydah said: 'Who will race me?' A young man said: 'I will, if you do not get angry.' He outran him, and I saw Abu Ubaydah's two braids bouncing while he was behind him on an Arab horse.
