✧ When Abū Ṭālib fell ill, a group of Quraysh entered upon him, among them Abū Jahl. They said, “O Abū Ṭālib, your brother's son reviles our gods, saying such and such, and doing such and such. Send for him and forbid him.” He said: Abū Ṭālib sent for him. Near Abū Ṭālib there was space for one man, and he feared that if the Prophet ﷺ entered upon his uncle, he would be too soft toward him over them. So he jumped up and sat in that spot. When the Prophet ﷺ entered, he found no seat except by the door, so he sat. Abū Ṭālib said, “O son of my brother, your people complain about you, claiming that you revile their gods, and say such and such, and do such and such.” He said, “O uncle, I only want from them one word, by which the Arabs will submit to them, and the non-Arabs will pay them the jizya.” They said, “What is it? By your father, a hundred.” He said, “Lā ilāha illā Allāh.” They stood up shaking their clothes and saying, “Has he made the gods one God? Indeed, this is a strange thing.” Then he recited until he reached: “They have not yet tasted My punishment.”
