✧ I came to Madinah when a disease had struck it. Abd al-Samad said: They were dying rapidly. I sat with Umar b. al-Khattab, and a funeral procession passed by him, and its occupant was praised with good. Umar said, 'It has become due.' Then another passed by, and its occupant was praised with good, and he said, 'It has become due.' Then another passed by, and it was spoken ill of, and Umar said, 'It has become due.' Abu al-Aswad said: I said to him, 'O Commander of the Faithful, what has become due?' He said, 'I said as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Any Muslim for whom four people testify to good, Allah will surely admit him to Paradise.' We said, 'And three?' He said, 'And three.' We said, 'And two?' He said, 'And two.' He said: And we did not ask him about one.

machine translationʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Dāwūd b. Abī al-Furāt, who is trustworthy (thiqah), narrated it from Ibn Buraydah, and there is disagreement about Dāwūd as well. Yaʿqūb al-Ḥaḍramī said, from him, from Ibn Buraydah, from Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmar, from Abū al-Aswad. He erred in mentioning Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmar in its chain, because of the many trustworthy memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) who contradicted him from Dāwūd, among them ʿAffān b. Muslim, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAbd al-Wārith, Zayd b. al-Ḥubāb, Yūnus b. Muḥammad al-Muʾaddib, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqriʾ, Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī, Shaybān b. Farrūkh and others. They narrated it from Dāwūd, from Ibn Buraydah, from Abū al-Aswad, without mentioning anyone between the two. Likewise Saʿīd b. Razīn narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah, from Abū al-Aswad, like the narration of the group from Dāwūd. ʿUmar b. al-Walīd al-Shannī narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah as a mursal report from ʿUmar, without mentioning anyone between them. The preserved (maḥfūẓ) version of this is what ʿAffān and those who followed him narrated from Dāwūd b. Abī al-Furāt.
