✧ I was with Abdullah b. Umar while we were waiting for the funeral of Umm Aban bt. Uthman b. Affan, and Amr b. Uthman was with him. Ibn Abbas came, led by his guide. He seemed to have been told of Ibn Umar's location, so he came and sat beside me, and I was between them. Then a sound came from the house, and Ibn Umar said, 'I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "The deceased is punished by his family's weeping over him."' Abdullah said it without qualification. Ibn Abbas said, 'We were with the Commander of the Faithful Umar until we reached al-Bayda', and he saw a man dismounted in the shade of a tree. He said to me, "Go and find out who that is." I went and found it was Suhayb. I returned and said, "You ordered me to find out who that is, and it is Suhayb." He said, "Tell him to join us." I said, "He has his family with him." He said, "Even if he has his family with him"—and perhaps Ayyub said: "Tell him to join us." When we reached Madinah, it was not long before the Commander of the Faithful was wounded. Suhayb came and said, "O his brother! O his companion!" Umar said, "Did you not know, or did you not hear"—or he said, "Did you not know, or did you not hear"—"that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'The deceased is punished by some of his family's weeping over him'?" Abdullah said it without qualification, and Umar said 'by some weeping.' I went to Aisha and mentioned Umar's statement to her. She said, 'No, by God, the Messenger of God ﷺ did not say that the deceased is punished by anyone's weeping. Rather, the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "God increases the disbeliever in punishment by his family's weeping, and God is the one who makes laugh and weep. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another."' Ayyub said: 'And Ibn Abi Mulaykah said...'
