✧ Umar b. al-Khattab delivered a sermon and said: 'O people, we used to know you while the Prophet ﷺ was among us and revelation came down, and God informed us of your news. Now the Prophet ﷺ has passed away and revelation has ceased. We know you only by what we say to you: whoever among you shows good, we think good of him and love him for it; whoever shows us evil, we think evil of him and hate him for it. Your inner secrets are between you and your Lord. There was a time when I thought that whoever recited the Quran desired God and what is with Him, but lately it has seemed to me that some men recite it desiring what people have. So desire God with your recitation, and desire Him with your deeds. By God, I do not send my agents to you to strike your bodies or take your wealth, but I send them to teach you your religion and your Sunnah. If anything other than that is done to anyone, let him bring it to me, for by Him in whose hand is my soul, I will exact retribution for him.' Amr b. al-As jumped up and said, 'O Commander of the Faithful, what if a Muslim is in charge of a flock and disciplines one of his flock—will you exact retribution from him?' He said, 'Yes, by Him in whose hand is Umar's soul, I will exact retribution from him. How could I not exact retribution from him when I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ exact retribution from himself? Do not strike the Muslims and humiliate them, do not confine them and tempt them, do not withhold their rights and cause them to disbelieve, and do not send them to the forests and neglect them.'
