حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ السَّعْدِيِّ قَالَ قَالَ
قَالَ لِي عُمَرُ: أَلَمْ أُحَدَّثْ أَنَّكَ تَلِي مِنْ أَعْمَالِ النَّاسِ أَعْمَالًا، فَإِذَا أُعْطِيتَ الْعُمَالَةَ لَمْ تَقْبَلْهَا ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: فَمَا تُرِيدُ إِلَى ذَاكَ ؟ قَالَ: أَنَا غَنِيٌّ لِي أَعْبُدٌ، وَلِي أَفْرَاسٌ أُرِيدُ أَنْ يَكُونَ عَمَلِي صَدَقَةً عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ، قَالَ: لَا تَفْعَلْ، فَإِنِّي كُنْتُ أَفْعَلُ مِثْلَ الَّذِي تَفْعَلُ؛ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُعْطِينِي الْعَطَاءَ، فَأَقُولُ: أَعْطِهِ مَنْ هُوَ أَفْقَرُ إِلَيْهِ مِنِّي، فَقَالَ: خُذْهُ، فَإِمَّا أَنْ تَمَوَّلَهُ، وَإِمَّا أَنْ تَصَدَّقَ بِهِ، وَمَا آتَاكَ اللهُ مِنْ هَذَا الْمَالِ وَأَنْتَ غَيْرُ مُشْرِفٍ لَهُ وَلَا سَائِلِهِ، فَخُذْهُ، وَمَا لَا فَلَا تُتْبِعْهُ نَفْسَكَ.

✧ Umar said to me, 'Am I not told that you take charge of some of the people's works, and when the workers' wages are given to you, you do not accept them?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'What do you want by that?' He said, 'I am wealthy, I have servants, and I have horses. I want my work to be charity for the Muslims.' He said, 'Do not do that, for I used to do the same as you do. The Messenger of God ﷺ used to give me gifts, and I would say, "Give it to someone more in need of it than me," until he said, "Take it, and either keep it as wealth or give it in charity. Whatever God brings you of this wealth while you are not coveting it or asking for it, take it; otherwise do not let yourself pursue it."'

رواه الزهري ويزيد بن خصيفة عن السائب بن يزيد فأما الزهري فجود إسناده رواه عن السائب بن يزيد عن حويطب بن عبد العزى عن عبد الله بن السعدي عن عمر رواه عن الزهري كذلك شعيب بن أبي حمزة وعمرو بن الحارث ويونس بن يزيد وعقيل وسفيان بن عيينة وبينه معمر بن راشد واختلف عن معمر فرواه عنه مروان الفزاري ولم يقم إسناده وتابعه عبد الرزاق عن معمر فقالا عن الزهري عن السائب بن يزيد أن عمر قال لابن السعدي ولم يذكرا فيه حويطبا وكذلك قال ابن المبارك عن معمر إلا أنه قال عن السائب عن عبد الله بن السعدي عن عمر ولم يذكر حويطبا ورواه الواقدي عن الزهري عن السائب عن حويطب عن عمر ولم يذكر ابن السعدي ورواه معاوية بن يحيى الصدفي عن الزهري عن سعيد بن المسيب عن عمر ووهم فيه وهما قبيحا وأما يزيد بن خصيفة فرواه عن السائب بن يزيد أن عمر قال لابن السعدي ولم يذكر حويطبا أيضا ورواه بكير بن الأشج عن بسر بن سعيد فقال عن ابن السعدي عن عمر قال ذلك الليث بن سعد عن بكير وخالفه ابن عجلان واختلف عنه فقال الثوري عن ابن عجلان عن بكير عن ابن السعدي عن عمر ولم يذكر بسر بن سعيد وخالفه يحيى القطان فرواه عن ابن عجلان عن يعقوب بن الأشج أخي بكير عن بسر بن سعيد عن عمر ولم يذكر ابن السعدي وروي عن قبيصة بن ذؤيب وعن أبي الزبير المكي عن ابن السعدي عن عمر وأحسنها إسنادا حديث شعيب بن أبي حمزة ومن تابعه عن الزهري عن السائب عن حويطب بن عبد العزى عن ابن السعدي عن عمر حدثنا أبو عمر القاضي محمد بن يوسف والقاسم بن إسماعيل المحاملي قالا ثنا محمد بن أحمد بن الجنيد ثنا أبو عاصم عن سفيان عن محمد بن عجلان عن بكير بن عبد الله عن عبد الله بن السعدي عن عمر قال قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ما أتاك الله من هذا المال غير سائله ولا مشرفه فخذه
machine translationAl-Zuhrī and Yazīd b. Khuṣayfah narrated it from al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd. As for al-Zuhrī, he gave it a sound chain: he narrated from al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd, from Ḥuwayṭib b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, from ʿAbdullāh b. al-Saʿdī, from ʿUmar. Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah, ʿAmr b. al-Ḥārith, Yūnus b. Yazīd, ʿUqayl and Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah narrated it from al-Zuhrī in the same way, and Maʿmar b. Rāshid made it clear. There is disagreement about Maʿmar: Marwān al-Fazārī narrated it from him without establishing the chain, and ʿAbd al-Razzāq followed him from Maʿmar. Both said, from al-Zuhrī, from al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd, that ʿUmar said to Ibn al-Saʿdī, and they did not mention Ḥuwayṭib in it. Ibn al-Mubārak likewise said from Maʿmar, except that he said, from al-Sāʾib, from ʿAbdullāh b. al-Saʿdī, from ʿUmar, and he did not mention Ḥuwayṭib. Al-Wāqidī narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from al-Sāʾib, from Ḥuwayṭib, from ʿUmar, and did not mention Ibn al-Saʿdī. Muʿāwiyah b. Yaḥyā al-Ṣadafī narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, from ʿUmar, and he erred in it with an ugly error. As for Yazīd b. Khuṣayfah, he narrated from al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd that ʿUmar said to Ibn al-Saʿdī, and he also did not mention Ḥuwayṭib. Bukayr b. al-Ashajj narrated it from Busr b. Saʿīd, saying from Ibn al-Saʿdī, from ʿUmar; al-Layth b. Saʿd said that from Bukayr. Ibn ʿAjlān differed from him, and there is disagreement about him. Al-Thawrī said from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Bukayr, from Ibn al-Saʿdī, from ʿUmar, and did not mention Busr b. Saʿīd. Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān differed from him and narrated it from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Yaʿqūb b. al-Ashajj, the brother of Bukayr, from Busr b. Saʿīd, from ʿUmar, and did not mention Ibn al-Saʿdī. It is also reported from Qabīṣah b. Dhuʾayb and from Abū al-Zubayr al-Makkī, from Ibn al-Saʿdī, from ʿUmar. The best of them in chain is the hadith of Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah and those who followed him, from al-Zuhrī, from al-Sāʾib, from Ḥuwayṭib b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, from Ibn al-Saʿdī, from ʿUmar. Abū ʿUmar the judge Muḥammad b. Yūsuf and al-Qāsim b. Ismāʿīl al-Maḥāmilī narrated to us, both saying: Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. al-Junayd narrated to us, Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us, from Sufyān, from Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān, from Bukayr b. ʿAbdullāh, from ʿAbdullāh b. al-Saʿdī, from ʿUmar, who said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whatever of this wealth Allah gives you without your asking for it or craving it, take it."
