✧ He said to 'Amr b. Sa'id, while he was dispatching troops to Makkah: 'Permit me, O commander, to tell you a statement that the Messenger of God ﷺ made the day after the conquest. My ears heard it, my heart retained it, and my eyes saw it when he spoke it. He praised God and extolled Him. Then he said: God made Makkah sacred; people did not make it sacred. It is not lawful for anyone who believes in God and the Last Day to shed blood in it or cut down a tree in it. If anyone takes license by the fighting of the Messenger of God ﷺ in it, then say: God, Mighty and Majestic, permitted His Messenger and did not permit you. I was only permitted in it for an hour of the day. Its sanctity has returned today as it was, so let the present inform the absent.' It was said to Abu Shuraih, 'What did 'Amr say to you?' He said, 'He said: I know that better than you, O Abu Shuraih. The sanctuary does not protect a disobedient person, nor one fleeing from blood guilt, nor one fleeing from the jizya.'
