✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon me, and with him was ‘Ali b. Abi Talib, and ‘Ali was recovering from an illness. She said: We had hanging clusters of grapes. The Prophet ﷺ and ‘Ali stood eating from them. The Messenger of God ﷺ began saying: “Gently, for you are recovering,” until ‘Ali desisted. She said: I had prepared barley and chard. When we brought it, the Messenger of God ﷺ said to ‘Ali: “Eat of this, for it is more suitable for you.” So they both ate that.

  • Ibn Abī Ḥatim

machine translationMuḥammad b. Abī Yaḥyā is Muḥammad b. Fulayḥ, and this hadith is well known from the narration of Fulayḥ. I used to think that he was Muḥammad b. Abī Yaḥyā al-Aslamī, Abū Ibrāhīm b. Abī Yaḥyā, so I put it to Abū Zurʿah, but he did not recognise it as a hadith of Muḥammad b. Abī Yaḥyā. He kept expressing astonishment, and the matter was confusing to him, just as it was confusing to me, until now I have established that he is Fulayḥ, who is given the kunya Abū Yaḥyā.
