✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in my house when a bedouin came and said: O Messenger of Allah, I had a wife and I married another woman in addition to her. My first wife claimed that she suckled my new wife one or two times—and he said once: one or two sucklings. He said: One or two sucklings do not make marriage prohibited—or he said: one or two sucklings.

- Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī
machine translationThe hadith of the two sucklings (al-maṣṣatān) has also come through authentic chains, but some have said that it is inconsistent (muḍṭarib), because there is disagreement over whether it is from ʿĀʾishah, or from al-Zubayr, or from Ibn al-Zubayr, or from Umm al-Faḍl.
in مسند أحمد, p. 27461 - Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī
machine translationThe Shāfiʿīs objected to the Mālikīs with the hadith of the single suckling and the two sucklings, and they answered it with false answers that should not be mentioned, but we point them out for fear that people be deceived by them. Among them is that some claimed it was abrogated, and this is false; it is not established by mere claim. Among them is that some alleged that it is a statement halted at ʿĀʾishah (mawqūf), and this is a gross error; rather, Muslim and others reported it through sound chains as a raised report (marfūʿ) from ʿĀʾishah and from Umm al-Faḍl. Among them is that some alleged that it is inconsistent (muḍṭarib), and this is an obvious mistake and a reckless rejection of the Sunnah by mere whim, and a weakening of what is authentic in order to support the schools of law.
