✧ When one of you is afflicted with a calamity, let him say: 'Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah, with You I seek reward for my calamity, so reward me in it and replace it for me with something better.' When Abu Salamah was dying he said: O Allah, leave behind for my family something better. When he died I said: Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah, with You I seek reward for my calamity, so reward me in it. She said: I wanted to say: 'And replace it for me with something better,' but I said: Who is better than Abu Salamah? I kept saying it until I said it. When her waiting period ended, Abu Bakr proposed to her and she refused him, then Umar proposed to her and she refused him. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to her, and she said: Welcome to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and to his messenger! Tell the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I am a jealous woman, and I have children, and none of my guardians is present. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to her: As for your saying that you have children, Allah will suffice you for your children. As for your saying that you are jealous, I will supplicate Allah to remove your jealousy. As for the guardians, there is none of them, present or absent, but he will be pleased with me. I said: O Umar, stand and marry the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Indeed, I will not reduce for you anything of what I gave your sister so-and-so: two hand-mills, two water jars, and a leather cushion stuffed with palm fiber. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to come to her, and when he came she would take Zaynab and place her in her lap to breastfeed her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was modest and generous; he would feel shy and go back. She did that several times. Ammar b. Yasir noticed what she was doing. One day he came, and Ammar came—he was her maternal brother—and entered upon her; he snatched her from her lap and said: Leave this ugly, disfigured one with which you have harmed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and entered; he began looking around the house and saying: Where is Zunab? What has Zunab done? She said: Ammar came and took her away. He said: Then he consummated the marriage with his wife, and then said: If you wish, I will spend seven nights with you, and then seven for the other wives.
