✧ I asked ‘Abd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith about the two rak‘ahs after ‘aṣr, and he said: We were with Mu‘āwiyah when Ibn al-Zubayr reported from ‘Ā’ishah that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray them. So Mu‘āwiyah sent to ‘Ā’ishah while I was among them, and we asked her. She said: I did not hear it from the Prophet ﷺ, but Umm Salamah narrated to me. So I asked her, and Umm Salamah narrated that the Prophet ﷺ prayed ẓuhr, then something was brought to him and he began distributing it until the time for ‘aṣr prayer arrived. He stood and prayed ‘aṣr, then prayed two rak‘ahs after it. When he had prayed them, he said: These two rak‘ahs I used to pray after ẓuhr. Umm Salamah said: I did tell her that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade them. He said: So I went to Mu‘āwiyah and informed him of that, and Ibn al-Zubayr said: Did he not pray them? I will continue to pray them. Mu‘āwiyah said to him: You are indeed contrary; you never cease to love opposition as long as you live!
