✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ passed by, and I was with him, and Abū Bakr, while ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd was reciting. He stopped and listened to his recitation. Then ʿAbd Allāh bowed and prostrated. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Ask and you shall be given; ask and you shall be given. He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ went on and said: Whoever would like to recite the Qurʾān fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it from Ibn Umm ʿAbd. He said: So I set out at night to ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd to give him good news of what the Messenger of God ﷺ had said. He said: When I knocked on the door, or he said: when he heard my voice, he said: What brings you at this hour? I said: I have come to give you good news of what the Messenger of God ﷺ said. He said: Abū Bakr has already preceded you. I said: If he did, he is indeed a forerunner in good deeds. We never competed in any good but Abū Bakr preceded us to it.
