✧ I entered upon Aishah and said, 'Will you not narrate to me about the illness of the Messenger of God ﷺ?' She said, 'Yes. The Messenger of God ﷺ became seriously ill, and he said, "Have the people prayed?" We said, "No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of God." He said, "Put water for me in the basin." So we did, and he bathed. Then he tried to rise, and he fainted. Then he regained consciousness and said, "Have the people prayed?" We said, "No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of God." He said, "Put water for me in the basin." So we did, and he bathed. Then he tried to rise, and he fainted. Then he regained consciousness and said, "Have the people prayed?" We said, "No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of God."' She said, 'And the people were gathered in the mosque waiting for the Messenger of God ﷺ for the 'Isha prayer. So the Messenger of God ﷺ sent to Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. Abu Bakr was a soft-hearted man, so he said, "O Umar, lead the people in prayer!" Umar said, "You are more entitled to that." So Abu Bakr led them in prayer during those days. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ felt some relief, and he came out between two men, one of whom was al-Abbas, for the Zuhr prayer. When Abu Bakr saw him, he moved to step back, but he gestured to him not to step back. And he ordered them to seat him beside him. So Abu Bakr prayed standing, and the Messenger of God ﷺ prayed seated.' Then I entered upon Ibn Abbas and said, 'Shall I present to you what Aishah narrated to me about the illness of the Messenger of God ﷺ?' He said, 'Bring it.' So I narrated it to him, and he did not object to anything of it except that he said, 'Did she name for you the man who was with al-Abbas?' I said, 'No.' He said, 'He was Ali.'
