✧ I came to Madinah and entered upon 'A'ishah. She said to me: 'Who are you?' I said: 'Sa'd b. Hisham b. 'Amir.' She said: 'May Allah have mercy on your father.' He said: I said: 'Tell me about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' She said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite.' I said: 'Yes, but tell me.' She said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to lead the people in the later 'Isha' prayer, then he would go to his bed. When it was the middle of the night, he would get up to his purification water and perform ablution, then he would enter the mosque and pray eight rak'ahs, making the recitation, bowing, and prostration equal in them. Then he would perform witr with one rak'ah. Then he would pray two rak'ahs while sitting. Then he would place his head down. Sometimes Bilal would come and announce the prayer to him before he dozed off, and sometimes I was unsure whether he dozed off or not until he announced the prayer to him.' She said: 'That was the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he grew old and gained weight. He used to lead the people in 'Isha' prayer, then go to his bed. When it was the middle of the night, he would get up to his purification water and perform ablution, then he would enter the mosque and pray six rak'ahs, making the bowing, prostration, and recitation equal in them. Then he would perform witr with one rak'ah. Then he would pray two rak'ahs while sitting. Sometimes he would not doze off until Bilal came and announced the prayer to him, and sometimes I was unsure whether he dozed off or not.'
