حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ وَابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ

أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ نَاسٌ مِنَ الْيَهُودِ فَقَالُوا: السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ، فَقَالَ: وَعَلَيْكُمْ قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: فَقُلْتُ: عَلَيْكُمُ السَّامُ وَالذَّامُ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: يَا عَائِشَةُ، لَا تَكُونِي فَحَاشَةً قَالَتْ: فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَمَا سَمِعْتَ مَا قَالُوا: السَّامُ عَلَيْكَ ؟ قَالَ: أَلَيْسَ قَدْ رَدَدْتُ عَلَيْهِمُ الَّذِي قَالُوا، قُلْتُ: وَعَلَيْكُمْ ؟ قَالَ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ: يَعْنِي فِي حَدِيثِ عَائِشَةَ إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَا يُحِبُّ الْفُحْشَ وَلَا التَّفَحُّشَ. وَقَالَ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ فِي حَدِيثِهِ: فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ وَإِذَا جَاءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللهُ حَتَّى فَرَغَ.

✧ Some Jews came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'Al-sām 'alayka (death be upon you), O Abu al-Qasim.' He replied: 'And upon you.' 'A'ishah said: I said: 'Upon you be death and blame.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'O 'A'ishah, do not be foul-mouthed.' She said: I said: 'O Messenger of God, did you not hear what they said: death be upon you?' He said: 'Did I not return to them what they said? I said: and upon you?' Ibn Numayr said: meaning in 'A'ishah's hadith: 'God, Mighty and Majestic, does not love obscenity or obscene speech.' And Ibn Numayr said in his hadith: 'Then this verse was revealed: "And when they come to you, they greet you with that with which God does not greet you" until it ended.'
