✧ I said to Aishah: 'Tell me about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' She said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would sleep at the beginning of the night and stand at its end. When he stood, he would perform ablution and pray as much as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, had decreed for him. If he had a need for his wife, he would go to her; otherwise he would lean toward his bed. If he had gone to his wife, he would sleep just as he was without touching water. Then, when it was near the first call to prayer, he would leap up—by Allah, she did not say 'stood'—and if he was in a state of major ritual impurity, he would pour water over himself—by Allah, she did not say 'bathed'—and he would not perform the ablution he does for prayer. Then he would pray two rak'ahs, then go out to the mosque.'

machine translationThis is more authentic than the hadith of Abū Isḥāq: "The Prophet used to sleep in a state of janābah without touching water."
in مسند أحمد, p. 26378 - Dāraquṭnī
machine translationIt seems that both reports could be authentic (ṣaḥīḥ): the report of al-Aswad mentioning ablution before sleeping while in a state of janābah, and the hadith of Abū Isḥāq saying that he did not touch water, because ʿĀʾishah said: Sometimes he would bring the bathing forward and sometimes he would delay it.
in مسند أحمد, p. 26378
