حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي قَالَ أَخْبَرَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ النَّاسُ فِي مَرَضِهِ يَعُودُونَهُ فَصَلَّى بِهِمْ جَالِسًا، فَجَعَلُوا يُصَلُّونَ قِيَامًا، فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْهِمْ: أَنِ اجْلِسُوا، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ: إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الْإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ، فَإِذَا رَكَعَ فَارْكَعُوا، وَإِذَا رَفَعَ فَارْفَعُوا، وَإِنْ صَلَّى جَالِسًا فَصَلُّوا جُلُوسًا.

Translation

✧ People entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his illness to visit him, and he prayed with them sitting. They started praying standing, so he gestured to them: 'Sit down.' When he finished, he said: 'The imam is appointed only to be followed. When he bows, bow; when he raises his head, raise yours; and if he prays sitting, then pray sitting.'
