What scholars said about it
In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.
- Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal
machine translationNo hadith has been authentically reported concerning cleaning oneself with water after relieving oneself (istinjāʾ), and the hadith of ʿĀʾishah is not authentic.
in مسند أحمد, p. 25961 - Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal
machine translationNo hadith has been authentically reported concerning istinjāʾ with water. It was said: What about the hadith of ʿĀʾishah? He said: It is not authentic, because no one other than Qatādah raised it to the Prophet (marfūʿ).
machine translationThe companions of Muʿādhah differed concerning this hadith. Qatādah raised it (as a statement of the Prophet ﷺ), but it is not widespread from him. Yazīd al-Rishk made it stopped (mawqūf, a statement of the Companion), and his companions agreed upon that, except Ibn Shawdhab, who raised it; the error in that is from him or from Ḍamrah. The correct position is what Shuʿbah, Ibn ʿUlayyah, Ḥammād b. Zayd, ʿAbd al-Wārith and Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān agreed upon. Abū Qilābah also narrated it and made it mawqūf, and I did not hear it from him except through the hadith of Ayyūb. The companions of Ayyūb did not differ, except Ibn Ṭahmān, who raised it. ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal narrated it and made it mawqūf, except that Abū Zayd raised it from him, and ʿĀṣim is a better memorizer than Abū Zayd, God willing. Isḥāq b. Suwayd and ʿĀʾishah bint ʿIrār also narrated it and made it mawqūf.
in مسند أحمد, p. 25961 - Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn
