✧ I performed Hajj along with Sinan b. Salamah, and Sinan had a sacrificial camel that became exhausted, and he was at a loss about it. I said: 'If I reach Makkah, I will certainly inquire about this.' He said: 'When we reached Makkah, I said: Let us go to Ibn Abbas. We entered upon him while a slave girl was with him. I had two questions and my companion had one. He said: Shall I leave you alone? I said: No. Then I said: I had a sacrificial camel that became exhausted on us, and I said: If I reach Makkah, I will certainly inquire about this. Ibn Abbas said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent sacrificial camels with so-and-so and commanded him concerning them. When he turned to leave, he came back and said: O Messenger of Allah, what should I do with what becomes exhausted of them? He said: Slaughter it, dip its sandal in its blood, and strike it on its side; and do not eat from it, neither you nor anyone of your companions.' He said: 'Then I said to him: I go on these military expeditions and gain booty, and I want to free a slave on behalf of my mother. Would that suffice for her if I free one?' Ibn Abbas said: A woman ordered Sinan b. Abdullah al-Juhani to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about her mother who died without performing Hajj. Would it suffice for her if she performed Hajj on her behalf? The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Do you think if her mother had a debt and she paid it on her behalf, would that suffice for her mother?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then let her perform Hajj on behalf of her mother.' And he asked him about seawater, and he said: 'Seawater is purifying.'
