✧ O son of my sister, the hair of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was above the wafrah (hair reaching the earlobes) and below the jummah (hair reaching the shoulders). And by Allah, O son of my sister, a month would pass upon the family of Muhammad ﷺ without a fire being lit in the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, except for a little meat. It was only the two black things: water and dates. However, around us were households of the Ansar—may Allah reward them well in the present and the past—and every day they would send to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the milk of their sheep, meaning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would get some of that milk. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, and there was no food on my shelf that a living being could eat except a little over half a measure of barley. I ate from it until it lasted so long that I thought it would never run out. Then I measured it, and it ran out. I wish I had never measured it. And by Allah, his mattress was of tanned leather stuffed with palm fiber.
