حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ لَمَّا ثَقُلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ قَالَ

أَيُّ يَوْمٍ هَذَا؟ قُلْنَا يَوْمُ الِاثْنَيْنِ قَالَ فَأَيُّ يَوْمٍ قُبِضَ فِيهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَتْ قُلْنَا قُبِضَ يَوْمَ الِاثْنَيْنِ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَرْجُو مَا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَتْ وَكَانَ عَلَيْهِ ثَوْبٌ بِهِ رَدْعٌ مِنْ مِشْقٍ فَقَالَ إِذَا أَنَا مِتُّ فَاغْسِلُوا ثَوْبِي هَذَا وَضُمُّوا إِلَيْهِ ثَوْبَيْنِ جَدِيدَيْنِ فَكَفِّنُونِي فِي ثَلَاثَةِ أَثْوَابٍ فَقُلْنَا أَفَلَا نَجْعَلُهَا جُدُدًا كُلَّهَا؟ قَالَ فَقَالَ لَا إِنَّمَا هُوَ لِلْمُهْلَةِ قَالَتْ فَمَاتَ لَيْلَةَ الثُّلَاثَاءِ

Translation

✧ Which day is this? We said: Monday. He said: Then on which day was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taken? She said: We said: He was taken on Monday. He said: Then I hope for what is between me and the night. She said: He was wearing a garment with a trace of red dye. He said: When I die, wash this garment of mine and add two new garments and shroud me in three garments. We said: Should we not make them all new? He said: No, it is only for the time of delay. She said: He died on Tuesday night.
