حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَي بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي صَالِحُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرِيبٍ عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ مُرَّةَ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ عَنْ عَوْفِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ الْأَشْجَعِيِّ قَالَ
خَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ دَخَلَ وَنَحْنُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ وَبِيَدِهِ عَصًا وَقَدْ عَلَّقَ رَجُلٌ أَقْنَاءَ حَشَفٍ فَطُعِنَ بِالْعَصَا فِي ذَلِكَ الْقِنْوِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةِ تَصَدَّقَ بِأَطْيَبَ مِنْ هَذَا إِنَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَةِ يَأْكُلُ الْحَشَفَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ came out to us, or entered while we were in the mosque, with a staff in his hand. A man had hung up bunches of bad dates, so he poked with the staff at that bunch and said, 'If the owner of this charity had willed, he would have given in charity something better than this. Indeed, the owner of this charity will eat bad dates on the Day of Resurrection.'
