✧ A man from the reinforcements of Himyar joined us and came to our camp. He had nothing with him except a sword, no other weapon. A man of the Muslims slaughtered a camel, and he kept trying until he took from its hide something like a shield, spread it on the ground, then lit a fire under it until it dried, and made for it a handle like a turs. It was decreed that we met our enemy, among whom were mixed groups of Romans and Arabs from Quda'ah. They fought us fiercely. Among the people was a Roman man on a chestnut horse with a gilded saddle, a belt smeared with gold, and a sword likewise. He kept charging at the people and inciting against them. That reinforcement man kept scheming against that Roman until he passed by him, then he came from behind and struck the hock of his horse with the sword, and it fell. Then he followed it with blows of the sword until he killed him. When Allah granted victory, he came asking for the spoils of the slain, and the people testified that he was his killer. Khalid gave him part of the spoils and kept the rest. When he returned to Awf's camp, he mentioned it, and Awf said to him, 'Go back to him and let him give you what remains.' He went back to him, but he refused. Awf walked until he came to Khalid and said, 'Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled that the spoils belong to the killer?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'What prevents you from handing over to him the spoils of his victim?' Khalid said, 'I considered it too much for him.' Awf said, 'If I see the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I will mention that to him.' When he came to Madinah, Awf sent him to complain to the Prophet ﷺ. He called Khalid while Awf was sitting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'What prevents you, O Khalid, from handing over to this man the spoils of his victim?' He said, 'I considered it too much for him, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'Hand it over to him.' He said, 'He passed by Awf, and Awf pulled his cloak and said, 'I fulfilled for you what I mentioned to you from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard him and became angry and said, 'Do not give it to him, O Khalid. Will you not leave my commanders alone? The likeness of you and them is like a man who bought camels and sheep and pastured them, then waited for their drinking time and brought them to a watering place. They entered it and drank the clear water and left its dregs. Its clear water is their command for you, and its dregs is upon them.'
