حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ زُهَيْرٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ عَنْ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ صُهَيْبٍ
أَنَّ صُهَيْبًا كَانَ يُكَنَّى أَبَا يَحْيَى وَيَقُولُ إِنَّهُ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ وَيُطْعِمُ الطَّعَامَ الْكَثِيرَ فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ يَا صُهَيْبُ مَا لَكَ تُكَنَّى أَبَا يَحْيَى وَلَيْسَ لَكَ وَلَدٌ؟ وَتَقُولُ إِنَّكَ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ وَتُطْعِمُ الطَّعَامَ الْكَثِيرَ وَذَلِكَ سَرَفٌ فِي الْمَالِ؟ فَقَالَ صُهَيْبٌ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَنَّانِي أَبَا يَحْيَى وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكَ فِي النَّسَبِ فَأَنَا رَجُلٌ مِنَ النَّمِرِ بْنِ قَاسِطٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَوْصِلِ وَلَكِنِّي سُبِيتُ غُلَامًا صَغِيرًا قَدْ عَقِلْتُ أَهْلِي وَقَوْمِي وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكَ فِي الطَّعَامِ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ كَانَ يَقُولُ خِيَارُكُمْ مَنْ أَطْعَمَ الطَّعَامَ وَرَدَّ السَّلَامَ فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي يَحْمِلُنِي عَلَى أَنْ أُطْعِمَ الطَّعَامَ

✧ Suhayb was given the kunya Abu Yahya and he used to say he was an Arab, and he fed people a great deal of food. ʿUmar said to him: O Suhayb, why are you called Abu Yahya when you have no son? And you say you are an Arab, and you feed a great deal of food—that is wastefulness in wealth. Suhayb said: The Messenger of God ﷺ gave me the kunya Abu Yahya. As for what you say about lineage, I am a man from al-Namir b. Qasit from the people of Mosul, but I was taken captive as a young boy after I had become aware of my family and my people. As for what you say about food, the Messenger of God ﷺ used to say: The best of you are those who feed others and return the greeting of peace. That is what drives me to feed people.
