✧ And on the authority of his grandfather, both of whom had been present at Hunayn with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the Zuhr prayer, then went to the shade of a tree and sat in it, at Hunayn. Al-Aqra' b. Habis and 'Uyaynah b. Hisn b. Hudhayfah b. Badr came to him disputing about 'Amir b. al-Adbat al-Ashja'i. 'Uyaynah was demanding blood money for 'Amir, for he was then the chief of Ghatafan, and al-Aqra' b. Habis was defending Muhallim b. Jaththamah because of his standing in Khindif. They argued back and forth before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while we were listening. We heard 'Uyaynah say: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I will not leave him until I make his women taste the heat just as my women have tasted." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Rather, you shall take the blood money: fifty in this journey of ours and fifty when we return." He kept refusing him, when a man from Banu Layth called Mukaytil, short and stocky, stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I find no likeness for this slain man in the dawn of Islam except like sheep that came to water and their front ranks were shot at, so the rest fled. Establish the way today and change it tomorrow." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hand and said: "Rather, you shall take the blood money: fifty in this journey of ours and fifty when we return." They accepted the blood money. Then they said: "Where is your companion so that the Messenger of Allah may seek forgiveness for him?" A dark, lean, tall man stood up, wearing a fine suit that he had prepared for death, and sat before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: "What is your name?" He said: "I am Muhallim b. Jaththamah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hand and said: "O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim b. Jaththamah. Rise." He rose, catching his tears with the edge of his cloak. As for us among ourselves, we said: We hope that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sought forgiveness for him; but as for what appeared from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, it was this.
