✧ I and a companion of mine arrived in Madinah, so we presented ourselves to the people but no one offered us hospitality. We came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him, so he took us to his house where he had four goats. He said, “Milk them, O Miqdad, divide the milk into four parts, and give each person his share.” I would do that. One night I set aside the Prophet’s ﷺ share and he was delayed, so I lay down on my bed. My self said to me, “The Prophet ﷺ has gone to a household of the Ansar, so why not get up and drink this drink?” It kept at me until I got up and drank his share. When it settled in my belly, I was seized by [regret over] what had passed and what had just happened. I said, “Now the Prophet ﷺ will come hungry [thirsty] and will not find anything in the bowl.” So I covered my face with a garment. The Prophet ﷺ came and gave a greeting that the wakeful could hear but which would not waken the sleeper. He uncovered it and saw nothing, then raised his head to the sky and said, “O Allah, give drink to the one who gave me drink, and feed the one who fed me.” I seized his supplication, got up, took the knife, and went near the goats. I began to feel which of them was fattest to slaughter it. My hand fell on the udder of one of them, and it was full of milk. I looked at another and it was full, until I saw that all of them were full. So I milked into the vessel and brought it to him. I said, “Drink.” He said, “The news first, O Miqdad?” I said, “Drink, then the news.” He said, “One of your misdeeds, O Miqdad.” So he drank, then said, “Drink.” I said, “Drink, O Prophet of Allah.” He drank until he was satisfied, then I took it and drank. Then I told him the news. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Ah.” I said, “It was such-and-such.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “This is a blessing that descended from heaven. Would that you had told me so I could have given your two companions to drink.” I said, “If you and I drink the blessing, I do not care whom it misses.”
