✧ When Abd Allah b. Thabit died, his daughter said, 'By Allah, I had hoped you would be a martyr. You had completed your preparations.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Allah has placed his reward according to his intention. What do you consider martyrdom?' They said, 'Being killed in the way of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Martyrdom is seven other than being killed in the way of Allah: the one who dies of plague is a martyr, the one who drowns is a martyr, the one who dies of pleurisy is a martyr, the one who dies of an abdominal disease is a martyr, the one who dies in a fire is a martyr, the one who dies under a collapse is a martyr, and the woman who dies in childbirth is a martyr.'

machine translationMālik b. Anas narrates it, and there are differences about it from him. Isḥāq b. Sulaymān al-Rāzī narrated it from Mālik, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh, from Jābir b. ʿAtīk, from the Prophet ﷺ, and he made a gross error in it, because it is not from the hadith of al-Zuhrī. Rather, Mālik narrated it from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh, the maternal grandfather of his mother, from Jābir b. ʿAtīk. So the compilers of the Muwaṭṭaʾ and others narrated it from Mālik, except that al-Qaʿnabī did not set its chain right. Al-Wāqidī narrated it from Mālik, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Jābir b. ʿAtīk, from his maternal uncle, from his father, from his grandfather, and I do not know what he meant by this. Abū ʿUmays narrated it from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Jabr b. ʿAtīk, and he did not say 'son of Jābir', and said: from his father, from his grandfather. Kathīr b. Zayd narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik b. Jābir b. ʿAtīk, from his paternal uncle, meaning Jabr b. ʿAtīk. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĪsā b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Laylā narrated it and said: from Jabr b. ʿAtīk, from his uncle. Al-Darāwardī narrated it from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Ayyūb b. Bashīr, as a mursal report from the Prophet ﷺ. Ḥammād b. Zayd narrated it from Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, from Ayyūb b. Bashīr, also as mursal. It was also narrated from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from his father; this was said by Sulaymān b. Arqam, who is abandoned in hadith (matrūk al-ḥadīth) when narrating from al-Zuhrī. ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmayr narrated it, and there are differences about it from him. Abū ʿAwānah narrated it from ʿAbd al-Malik, from a man of the Anṣār whom he did not name, from the Prophet ﷺ. Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd narrated it from Jabr, from the Prophet ﷺ. No one corroborated Mālik in his saying 'Jābir b. ʿAtīk', and God knows best. It is among the things held against Mālik.
