حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ عَنْ سُفْيَانَ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ يَعْنِي ابْنَ كُهَيْلٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ قَالَ

لَطَمْتُ مَوْلًى لَنَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبِي: اقْتَصَّ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: كُنَّا مَعْشَرَ بَنِي مُقَرِّنٍ سَبْعَةً لَيْسَ لَنَا خَادِمٌ إِلَّا وَاحِدَةٌ، فَلَطَمَهَا أَحَدُنَا، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: أَعْتِقُوهَا فَقِيلَ لَهُ: لَيْسَ لَهُمْ خَادِمٌ غَيْرُهَا، قَالَ: لِتَخْدُمَنَّهُمْ، فَإِذَا اسْتَغْنَوْا عَنْهَا فَلْيُعْتِقُوهَا

✧ I slapped a slave of ours. My father said to him: 'Take retaliation.' Then he said: 'We, the Banu Muqarrin, were seven and had only one servant. One of us slapped her, and the Prophet ﷺ said: "Set her free." It was said to him: "They have no servant other than her." He said: "She shall serve them, and when they can do without her, let them set her free."
