✧ I went out at the time Tustar was conquered until I arrived at Kufa and entered the mosque. There I was with a circle in which there was a lean man of men, with good front teeth, in whom it was known that he was from the men of the people of the Hijaz. He said: I said: 'Who is the man?' The people said: 'Do you not know him?' I said: 'No.' They said: 'This is Hudhayfah b. al-Yaman, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He said: So I sat, and he spoke to the people, saying: 'The people used to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about good, and I used to ask him about evil.' The people disapproved of that from him, so he said to them: 'I will inform you of what you disapproved of. Islam came when it came, and a matter came that was not like the matter of the Jahiliyyah. I had been given understanding in the Quran, and men would come and ask about good, but I used to ask him about evil. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, will there be evil after this good as there was evil before it?" He said: "Yes." He said: I said: "What is protection, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "The sword." He said: I said: "Is there any remainder after this sword?" He said: "Yes, there will be a commandership upon defects and a truce upon corruption." He said: I said: "Then what?" He said: "Then callers to misguidance will arise. If on that day there is for Allah a caliph on earth who lashes your back and takes your wealth, then stay close to him; otherwise, die while biting onto the root of a tree." He said: I said: "Then what?" He said: "The Dajjal will emerge after that, with him a river and fire. Whoever falls into his fire, his reward becomes binding and his sin is removed, and whoever falls into his river, his sin becomes binding and his reward is removed." He said: I said: "Then what?" He said: "Then the foal is bred, and it will not be ridden until the Hour stands." The lean man of men means the type of man. His saying, "What is protection from it?" He said: "The sword" — Qatadah used to apply this to the apostasy that occurred in the time of Abu Bakr. His saying, "a commandership upon defects" means upon impurity and truce, meaning peace. His saying, "upon corruption" means upon rancor. It was said to Abd al-Razzaq: 'From whom is the explanation?' He said: 'From Qatadah, he claimed.'
