Translation

✧ Which of you remembers the statement of the Messenger of God ﷺ about the trial? I said, 'I do, as he said it.' He said, 'You are bold concerning it, or concerning him.' I said, 'The trial of a man in his family, his wealth, his children, and his neighbor, which prayer, charity, enjoining good, and forbidding evil expiate.' He said, 'This is not what I mean; rather the trial that surges like the waves of the sea.' I said, 'You have nothing to fear from it, O Commander of the Believers, for between you and it there is a closed door.' He said, 'Will it be broken or opened?' I said, 'Rather it will be broken.' He said, 'Then it will never be closed again.' We said, 'Did Umar know who the door was?' He said, 'Yes, just as he knows that before tomorrow there is a night.' Waki said in his hadith: Masruq said to Hudhayfah, 'O Abu Abd Allah, did Umar know what you told him?' We said, 'Did Umar know who the door was?' He said, 'Yes, just as he knows that before tomorrow there is a night. I related to him a hadith that was not among the errors.' We were too awed by Hudhayfah to ask him who the door was, so we commanded Masruq and he asked him, and he said, 'The door was Umar.'
