حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا زَائِدَةُ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ أَخِي حُذَيْفَةَ عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ
أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ لِأُصَلِّيَ بِصَلَاتِهِ فَافْتَتَحَ فَقَرَأَ قِرَاءَةً لَيْسَتْ بِالْخَفِيضَةِ وَلَا بِالرَّفِيعَةِ قِرَاءَةً حَسَنَةً يُرَتِّلُ فِيهَا يُسْمِعُنَا قَالَ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ نَحْوًا مِنْ قِيَامِهِ ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ نَحْوًا مِنْ رُكُوعِهِ فَقَالَ سَمِعَ اللهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ذِي الْجَبَرُوتِ وَالْمَلَكُوتِ وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ وَالْعَظَمَةِ حَتَّى فَرَغَ مِنَ الطَّوْلِ وَعَلَيْهِ سَوَادٌ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ هُوَ تَطَوُّعُ اللَّيْلِ

✧ I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night to pray with his prayer. He began and recited a recitation that was neither low nor high—a beautiful recitation, measured, making us hear it. Then he bowed for about as long as his standing. Then he raised his head for about as long as his bowing and said, “Samiʿa Llāhu liman ḥamidah.” Then he said, “Al-ḥamdu lillāhi dhī l-jabarūt wa-l-malakūt wa-l-kibriyā’ wa-l-ʿaẓamah,” until he finished the lengthy prayer while darkness of night remained. ʿAbd al-Malik said, “It is the voluntary night prayer.”
