Translation

✧ Abu al-Tufayl narrated: There occurred between Hudhayfah and a man from the people of al-'Aqabah what occurs between people. He said, "I adjure you by God, how many were the people of al-'Aqabah?" The people said to him, "Tell him since he asked you." He said, "We were told that they were fourteen." Abu Nu'aym said: The man said, "We were told that they were fourteen." He said, "If you were among them"—and Abu Nu'aym said, "among them"—"then the people were fifteen, and I bear witness by God that twelve of them are at war with God and His Messenger in the life of this world and on the day when witnesses stand forth." Abu Ahmad said: "the witnesses." "And we excused three, who said, 'We did not hear the caller of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and we did not know what the people intended.'" Abu Ahmad said in his narration: "He was in a stony tract and walked, so he said to the people, 'The water is little, so let no one get to it before me.' He found people who had preceded him, so he cursed them that day."
